Types of Ammunition

Ball

Ball shot is a basic solid round cannonball. Ball shot is best used for hitting targets at medium to long range.

Chain

Chain shot is two cannonballs connected by a chain. It is designed to damage the sails of a ship to reduce its mobility.

Grape

Grape shot is a shot type that consists of a mass of small metal balls. It turns the cannon into a large shotgun, which makes it extremely deadly against exposed crew.

Double Shot

Double shot is two Ball shots fired from a single cannon. Double shot has increased damage yet reduced range and accuracy, therefore is best used in close combat. you can only get double shot through an Officer perk.

Double Charge

Double charge is more gunpowder loaded into the cannon with a single shot. Double charge has more penetration therefore it is best used against heavily armoured targets or to create a large amount of leaks. you can only get double charge through an Officer perk.

Types of Cannon

Medium Guns

Medium Cannon.png
Medium guns have average accuracy, fast reload and average range. Their damage output is also lightly higher put than the long guns. With their incredible rate of fire they are capable to produce an unmatched DPM at medium range.

Long Guns

Long Cannon.jpg
Long guns have good accuracy, medium reload and good range. They also have a high projectile speed as well as a relatively flat trajectory. Their damage output is slightly lower than medium guns. Due to their range they are great to shoot enemy masts from afar.

Carronades

Carronade.jpg
Carronades are built much lighter than cannons of equivalent caliber. This means that a much higher caliber carronade can be placed in a smaller cannons position. However the maximum amount of propellant used is much lower due to lighter construction. This leads to the ability to fire a larger projectile but at lower velocity and range. A ship carrying carronades will have to maintain close range to the enemy to apply damage. This can make carronades an attractive option for lighter ships that can properly dictate range while avoiding enemy broadsides.

Caliber

Age of sail cannons and carronades are rated by caliber which is the weight of their round shot in imperial pounds. This is not to be confused with modern caliber which is categorized by the diameter of projectiles. Increasing caliber of cannon generally increases damage and range at the cost of loading time.
